I’ve explored the islands in a lot of different ways — zip lining through the treetops, soaring over rainbows in a helicopter, mountain biking, and with my own two feet. Hawaii is always magical, no matter what method you’re using to explore her. But in my opinion, one of the very best ways to see and embrace this magic is from the back of a horse. Happy Trails Hawaii is a hidden treasure on Oahu’s fabled north shore, providing guests with horseback tours through the lush jungle forests and sun-kissed valleys surrounding Waimea Valley.Founded in 1993, the company is unique in that the owners work in the business. Passionate about the land, the animals, and the unique experience that they provide, they have created an attraction that has been ranked among the top ten things to do on Oahu for the past seven years.I recently spent some time at the Happy Trails ‘headquarters’ chatting with one of the owners, and I absolutely love her passion and vision for the island of Oahu, as well as her business. I also loved the fact that they care about keeping their horses happy, as well as their guests. All of the horses have free roam of +300 acres with panoramic ocean and mountain views…what a great life!
Tours head out 3-4 times each day, with no more than 8-10 people per group. Visitors have the option of embarking on a 1.5 hour or a 2 hour tour. The horses are well cared for and well trained, and take riders on an epic adventure with breathtaking views, fresh fruit, and an up-close-and-personal encounter with a Hawaii that most tourists don’t get to see.Horseback riding makes a wonderful family activity, and children as young as 6 are welcomed on the tours. Since it is such a popular attraction, it is recommended that reservations are made 2-3 weeks in advance, particularly during the busy season of summer and around holidays.
